Alex Sodré: IBJJF World No-Gi Championship as a Black Belt in 2019.
When you think of world-class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, your mind might wander to big cities like Rio, Los Angeles, or New York. But last week, just 15 miles south of Cleveland, Watermark Jiu Jitsu in Brecksville hosted one of the sport’s most accomplished athletes: Alex Sodré, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt and IBJJF No-Gi World Champion.
If you're looking for Jiu Jitsu near Cleveland, here’s why this visit matters—and what it says about the culture we’re building at Watermark.
Who Is Alex Sodré?
Born in Manaus, Brazil, Alexssandro “Alex” Sodré started training Jiu Jitsu at age 12 after walking past a gym sign on his way home from school. With the support of coaches and community, he worked his way up—eventually earning his black belt and becoming one of the most decorated light-featherweight competitors of his generation.
His accomplishments include:
- 🏆 IBJJF World No-Gi Champion (2019)
- 🏆 IBJJF Pans Champion (2022)
- 🏆 Brazilian Nationals No-Gi Champion
- 🥉 Multiple-time medalist at IBJJF Worlds, Pans, and Europeans
Alex is known not only for his competition record, but for his technical precision, fluid movement, and generosity as a teacher. And on Friday, June 13th, he brought that energy to our noon class at Watermark.
A Jiu Jitsu Class to Remember
Alex guest-taught our 12:00 PM no-gi class, and the room was electric. From warmups to technique breakdowns to live rolling, he led with a mix of professionalism and humility that left a lasting impression.
What made this class special wasn’t just his accolades—it was how accessible and engaging he made each move. Students of all levels attended the session, including first-timers, weekend warriors, and competitors looking to sharpen their no-gi game.
What Is No-Gi Jiu Jitsu—and Why Does It Matter?
If you're new to BJJ, there are two main styles: gi and no-gi.
- Gi Jiu Jitsu uses a traditional kimono uniform with grips on the sleeves, lapel, and pants.
- No-Gi Jiu Jitsu is practiced in athletic wear—think rashguards and shorts—and relies more on body control, speed, and positioning.
Alex Sodré is a master of no-gi grappling, and his ability to teach world-class technique without overwhelming beginners made this session a true gift.
Why We Bring In Athletes Like Alex
At Watermark Jiu Jitsu, we believe that everyone should have access to world-class training—not just elite competitors. That’s why we regularly invite visiting black belts and top athletes to share their skills with our community.
